Why Is Gen XY Worth Less Than Their Parents?

July 06, 2012

You just got the news. One of your friends just had their first baby and now comes the question on how to make a smart money move with a baby gift that won't break the bank. You would like to do something for them that is unique and special, but you just don't have a fortune within your budget to spend on the gift. I promise you that rattles, blankets, and onesies won't separate you from the pack. Here are five ideas you can use that can make you shine with your friends and leave a lasting impression for the years to come.

  1. Favorite Books- You can create your own nice little package of 3 or4 timeless classics that almost all parents will use at some point to read to their kids. Package together something like Goodnight Moon, Where The Wild Things Are, The Very Hungry Caterpillar (almost any Eric Carle book), or Are You My Mother are all books that would be inexpensive to put together in some neat packaging.
  2. Personal Toddler Stool- It won't be long until the diaper genie is full and your friends will begin the fun part of parenting as their new baby begins to learn how to stand and walk. One cool thing you can get them that they won't be able to use right away, but will come in handy down the road is a toddler stool. If you personalize it with their child's name, it will look great in the bathroom or bedroom and will get a lot of use. By the way, it could also act as a little foot stool for the parents until the baby becomes a toddler.
  3. Collectible Toys- I didn't know many years ago that Thomas The Train was going to be so popular when it first came out and George Carlin was doing the voice. Those videos and tapes with his voice are now much more collectible because he has since passed away and Thomas The Train is still popular today. If you are able to get one or two items of memorabilia (action figure, books, etc.) of an up and coming new show that could take off for the future, you could have a piece that is worth more money in the future. If you are looking for collectible toys, the Toynk store has an amazing amount of inventory to choose from. Just think about old toy trains and their worth today!
  4. Stock- Yes, stock! Through the website www.oneshare.com, you can actually buy one share of stock registered for the new baby along with a basic frame for less than $50. Of course the stock price does matter, but currently stocks like Sirius Radio, Ford, Southwest Airlines, or Office Depot for under $50. For just a tad more you can get it framed so it can be on the wall of the baby's room. What a way to make an impact.
  5. First Sandals- They may not be on sale forever, but even at Nordstrom's they have a sale on Nike sandals for your baby for only $11.90! Those first pair of baby's shoes always makes a great gift, but in many places sandals can come in just as handy as shoes. Look for the clearance area or sale areas of the major department stores to get a find like this and still keep your gift unique

We got lots of gifts over the years when we had our three kids, but there are very few things that I can remember we still have now they are a little older. There are still a few piggybanks, toys, and picture frames left behind, but most of the other stuff we either gave away to charity or to a friend of ours. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get something with your individual stamp. Perhaps one of these smart money moves will make you shine.
