Three Apps That Are Downright Creepy

September 25, 2013

Recently, I had a chance to take a day trip to Napa Valley. The views were gorgeous and the wine was great. As you can guess, I visited a couple of vineyards for tastings and also had lunch with a friend who owns People’s Wine Revolution(PWR), another winery in Calistoga. (Napa and Calistoga are within minutes of each other)

If you’ve ever been to a tasting, some places make it a point to share information about their Wine Club Memberships. I always wondered why this was a constant factor at tastings. During lunch with PWR I asked him, “why are club memberships so important?” In a gist, he shared with me that it helps the vineyards and wineries by knowing there would be a consistent income stream from people who really love their wines and want to support. My friend and his wife are individual winemakers, and from their perspective, it made sense to me. If I really love his wine (which I do) and want to help another small company do well, then why shouldn’t I invest where it’s a win for my taste buds as well as a win for the company? Some vineyards and wineries are small businesses, some are family run, and obviously some are to a point that they have scaled to larger companies. Either way, they had to start somewhere!

Another perspective is that everyone has different taste buds and we all like different types of wines. But, there are a lot of wines out there that are just not that great. There has been many times I’ve walked into a grocery store or local wine warehouse and just picked a bottle of wine because the price was reasonable and the label looked cool. However, after taking it home and trying it, the wine was terrible. Usually, I’d  just stick it in the fridge saying “I’ll finish it later”, but eventually, down the drain it went.

After many of those experiences, it got me thinking, “why not join a wine club membership to the vineyards and wineries I really enjoy?” Most of these clubs give a 10-20% discount on their current and new wines. They ship at least 2 bottles to you anywhere from 4-6 times a year, and you can sign up directly on their websites to have them deliver directly to your home.

I don’t know if wine memberships make sense for everyone, however, if you find one at a vineyard or winery you love, at least you know that you’ll not be metaphorically pouring money down the drain. As far as I know, wine has been a welcomed occasional gift for any event, so it might save you time looking for a last minute gift down the road! So, what wine club will you be joining?
