The birth of a baby is one of the most life changing events for a family. As parents, friends, and family rejoice in the new addition to their family, many people often wonder what to get the infant for a baby gift. Over the years, I've witnessed being showered with baby blankets, rattles, piggybanks, and designer outfits. I've even bought these gifts myself. Unfortunately, within six to twelve months most of these gifts are unusable anymore, and wind up in a box that you'll rummage through 15 years from now. While a Tiffany's battle rattle might seem like a good idea, I'm going to share with you why buying a domain name might just be the single best baby gift that you could ever give a newborn.

We don't know what the future will hold for our babies. They may end up being famous and in the movies. They could end up being the next successful billionaire such as Mark Cuban. It is possible they wind up being an artist or a web designer or a photographer. While these answers are unknown to us today, what we do know is that the buying and selling of domain names has become a huge business since the 1990's. We also know that social media is not a fad and it's actually becoming the center of the universe with how the next generations are communicating with each other. Having the ability to create your own personal page at your domain name could give your child a huge edge somewhere down the road. In fact, if they became the next Taylor Swift their own domain name could be worth millions.

Most parents put a ton of time and thought into choosing a baby's name. Do you remember screaming your new baby's full name up the stairs to see if sounded good to you? Or maybe you considered what family member's name would be included? You might have actually changed the spelling of the name just to be a little bit more original with the name of your new child. Parents go through a great amount of time and pain when selecting the name of their new baby, so why not be smart about it and pick up the domain name, the Twitter handle, and even an Instagram handle after you come to a concrete decision on the name?

If you think this is a silly idea, take the enormity of what can happen if the domain name gets in the wrong hands. Jane Hill owns the domain name to www.nets.com and has been poking and provoking the owner of the Brooklyn Nets for years on this domain as it is not the official domain of the Brooklyn Nets. When I worked for American Express many years ago, ex-employees built out the domain www.americanexpresssux.com and launched off all kinds of information about their former employer. Even superstar Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam battled over a fan who may all sorts of tweets until Twitter officially made the owner list out that this was not Eddie Vedder but just a fan of Pearl Jam.

My point behind all of this is that your child will ultimately have a personal brand no matter what they do. More and more employers are doing searches online to see what then can find from a potential new employee, so you just don't know how this will turn out when your child gets into the real world. Skip the rattles, the blankets, and the booties, and consider getting your child their own domain. It could just be one of the best investments you ever make for them.
