You should have included Chris Tucker and Marc Anthony in the list.

I guess there's a problem in the way the industry pays. To save their talents, why not producers pay the actors less the tax deductions? Just the same as company employees.

And there are always willing accountants to work with celebrities.

Regards,
Belinda

The permanent insurance thing is tough. Right now, we carry over a million dollars in term insurance, which would more than care for our daughter. It's a great deal, but I just can't see how we can swing the permanent with our budget being what it is.

How much am I willing to give is too subjective :) Well, it depends on how fond am I of the couple. If I like them, I can give %25 worth of gift, if I dislike one of the partners, $19, If I don't like both of them, I give $12 just for the sake of giving.

The following pagrraaph is taken from an IRS publication regarding Itemized Deductions.Medical expenses include insurance premiums paid for accident and health or qualified long-term care insurance. You may not deduct insurance premiums for life insurance, for policies providing for loss of wages because of illness or injury, or policies that pay you a guaranteed amount each week for a sickness. In addition, the deduction for a qualified long–term care insurance policy's premium is limited. Refer to Publication 502 , Medical and Dental Expenses.

Yes. Ins premium, dotcor visits, prescription drugs, contact lenses, and necessarily surgery or purchases are deductible. Over the counter drugs and unnecessarily surgery like boob jobs are not.You add them all up, substract any medical reimb and thats your medical tax deduction. but it is limited to 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (which is your income adjustments), so if you make too much money you most likely cant take the benefit. If you want to save more money, add in you over the counter drugs.

Greedy people like fattened hogs go to the slaughterhouse, period. No free pass, no get out of jail, no special treatment. Celebrities should know they are being watched very carefully. As a seasoned 25 year Tax Pro (CPA, M. S. Taxation) I find it very difficult why these Celebs can't figure it out.
I think you need to update your information. There was a provision included that grandfathered cars purchased this year so as not to impact car sales for this year.

Thanks

I think that another important way to avoid being hacked is to do ALL your software updates! I know too many people who think they can get away with not doing the software updates . . . and then you hear how old software gets hacked and everyone panics! Do your updates people!

I think if small businesses and sole proprietorships are diligent in keeping good records, have backup with a tax consultant, and doesn't do anything real stupid, the chances of an audit are pretty low.

Thank you for an excellent post! Good things to know!

Honestly, I think that this is much less of an issue now that so many of us are working from home. When this part of the tax law was written, "location independent" work did not exist as it does today due to the advances in technology, so those people who took the deduction may have been overly scrutinized.

That being said, I would suggest anybody who qualifies takes full advantage-- because, once the powers that be realize there is another place they can get some additional tax funds from...this deduction may just go away.

I tend to buy extras of supplies. Say if I need one pencil I buy one set instead. But what usually happens is I tend to forget I bought more than one or two or misplace them so I buy another set. I tend to find things when I don't look for them anymore after a few months. This is terribly wasteful but can be simply remedied by better organization skills on my part.

A couple of years ago my wife wanted an iPod Nano, and I got her one for her birthday. Here it is a couple of years later and we just found the iPod in our kitchen drawer, opened but never used. The resale value on that Nano is probably next to nothing at this point even though it's never been used.

I totally agree with you. Giving trophies to every participant even when they loose or continually loose only teaches them that no matter what "effort" they put into participating they will always get regarded. Instead, and like you, I believe that only the first, second, and maybe third places should be regarded with a trophy. Any thing else, is just a waste of every bodies money.

While you mentioned it, it needs to be emphasized again and again. There are multiple versions of FICO too, and some larger financial institutions may customize their FICO scores to emphasize specific elements of risk, like payment history, based on the type of loan (mortgage, installment, revolving). So you could pull your FICO score from Equifax or MyFICO, apply for a loan that same day with the same credit data, and have a different FICO score (perhaps the bank was using FICO v5 instead of v7). Even lenders struggle with scoring distinctions and may link the score to Equifax or the other Credit Reporting Agencies (CRAs). The CRAs provide the data (inputs) while FICO calculates the score (outputs) based on that date. If you're declined, it's because of bank decisioning criteria, not the CRAs. If your credit reports are inaccurate, you need to get them corrected since the inaccuracies may impact your scores.

We have the Counter here in LA, but the rest all sound soooo good! When I was a kid, I was never an adventurous eater and all I ever wanted when we went out to eat was a cheeseburger and fries. Nowadays I eat everything but will still never say no to a good burger joint. I just tried Astro Burger in West Hollywood: YUM.

State tax code and regulations are very complex. And they change every year, of course. This creates big challenges for you as a business owner if you don’t have a tax expert advising you.

I echo what JP said. Also, you cannot take a State of the Union speech as anything meaningful. Is clapping, standing, not clapping, hugging, any more meaningful? SOTU is a exercise in tradition nothing more. Also, when we talk about taxes if it not specified then it is assumed to mean income taxes. There is nothing more certain than that we will be taxed from all angles, such is life. As to the debt, we certainly don't want to exceed debt to the GDP. But the idea that getting rid of all debt is good is deceptive. Name me one country that does not have debt? Can you answer why not? Because debt, in moderation, is the engine of progress. You cannot start a business without debt, and banks cannot loan to the majority of start ups businesses without debt. Ask a Saudi Arabian how hard it is to start a business there because laws do not allow banks to leverage loans with debt? If you are not from a wealthy family or in with the Sheikh, fugetaboutit!

The debt debate has been a recurring event every decade or so and is used as a scare tactic by politicians to get elected. In reality the debt level is largely irrelevant, and nothing like credit card debt, since the government can print it's way out. It's not the ideal solution, as hyperinflation is the outcome. The alternative being no debt offers other concerns. The most recent debt pay down under the Clinton administration may have helped fuel the most recent banking collapse. With a lower amount of safe debt vehicles to invest in, banks and investors had to turn toward riskier assets to generate income. It's a fine line between too much, too little and just right.

I often wonder how we are going to get out of this debt, knowing full well its going to cost each of us something. Not rausing income taxes for us under 250K is nice, but you are right--there are many other avenues to raise taxes on us.

Jai,

That is exactly the spirit we need to keep getting better. You are right, you can't win. You can only go to work hard every day and help make the lives around you better:)

If we focus on what we can control and influence, we are all likely to get ahead!

Thanks,

The Government is a business that we are forced to be in. I don't blame them for anything because I can't win. So I fight forward to break ahead of the mold and hopefully stay well away from their radar.

My wife and I just got something from the IRS stating that we owe a few dollars for something. It was a stretch if you ask me but it's the Good Ole Gov.

My reason for donating here in this country rather than overseas is that I know what it's like to be poor, and know that there are many people in this country who are homeless, jobless, and hungry, and for whom there is no safety net. They don't have enough food or heat or adequate clothing and can't afford to go to the dentist or get medical care or medications they need. I believe we should help these people first. We spend billions in foreign aid while going into massive debt here at home and neglecting our own because we supposedly can't afford it. We should take care of our people here first.

In one article I see credit and loans being heralded. Now this contradicting article. Using loans and credit on liability items to get things now- undermines the impetus behind paying for things (which w see a lot of in this country). Credit driven societies never worked.

The biggest misunderstanding about Suze Orman's prepaid card, unfortunately stoked up by Orman herself, seems to be the notion that the Approved Card, as it is called, can help its users improve their credit scores. So it's time we set the record straight: the Suze Orman's card does not affect your credit score in any way, either positive or negative. Colleen Tunney-Ryan, a spokeswoman for TransUnion, a credit bureau that has partnered with Orman to provide her card's users with access to their credit reports and scores, states it plainly: "It is important to understand that this data will not appear on any TransUnion credit report at this time." I think that should settle it.
Steph,

It did make me wonder this. If the advice she gave over the past 10 to 15 years was so good, how could so many of the people following her be so broke that they would need a pre paid debit card? Guess, you are right . . . it's all about the money for her.

Actally I agree. I have always been a fan of Suze and have bought a couple of her books. I admire someone, especilly a woman, who has the knowledge and courage to discuss and teach others about money and how to handle finances. I did get an email about her pre-paid debit card and I was actually surprised. Other than book and lectures, I dont think it is a good move for her...but hey its all about the money right?

Comment on How Much Should I Leave For A Tip? by Chase

This is a hot button issue so I'll try to be brief (we'll see if I succeed):

Tipping is required in the US because states allow restaurants to lower minimum wage for tipped employees to $2.13/hr. This rate has not changed in the 10+ years I've been in food service. It grossly undervalues the employee and puts the responsibility of the guest to pay their wage. It is ridiculous that companies can do that - but in foreign countries the prices are inflated in order for the companies to pay their staff a wage that will allow them to make a living without tips. If tipping wasn't customary in the US then your bill would automatically be higher, whether it be a service charge or just inflated food costs. It's a push and pull and I honestly can't say what I'd prefer - I make more money in tips than a restaurant could probably afford hourly - but I do hate needing the charity of others in order to pay my mortgage and keep my lights on.

I've got over a decade of experience so I fancy myself as a waiter who should average 20% as I pride myself on giving stellar service. Sure, sometimes I miss and have my off days, but more than not I go above and beyond what normal people would expect when they pay 20%. However the days I'm off I get less than that (at times nothing) yet the days I give the best service of my life the number rarely goes above 20%. Guests often overlook rewarding great service but never forget to punish poor service, even if it's minimal or not the servers fault. I think when discussing the guilt regarding what tip you left it's important to point out that as much as you lower the tip for bad service you should equal be rewarding good service.

Lastly - you should never feel compelled to tip, even if it's added to your bill. I struggle over it as a restaurant employee because I feel I should OVER tip because I understand or want good karma. While I won't leave without some tip I don't leave a normal tip if the service isn't good. I'm infinitely patient and understanding so it takes a lot for me to lower a tip, but at the same rate you have to blow me away to get a significant amount more. In the case of tip being added to your check - if you disagree with the amount politely ask for the manager and explain to him that you didn't feel the server deserved a tip of that amount. Any manager/restaurant worth their salt will remove the tip to show their appreciation of your patronage and assure a return visit - and this also allows them to discuss the situation with the server and hopefully coach them in to a better employee that will then be better for it (or help the restaurant as a whole and get rid of someone who is sub-par).

I feel like I've heard every side of the tipping argument and have sympathies all around - but it's a government sanctioned practice. If you don't like tipping you have two choices - don't tip or harshly judge when tipping and the server suffers (and nothing changes), or work to change the standard through your local representatives for a fairer pay scale for tipped employees. I know which will happen as it takes far too much effort to change something like this and it would affect the bottom line of large and small companies who would fight against it, but I like to dream that some day it might be a little better for everyone involved - guest and server.

I’ve got over a decade of experience so I fancy myself as a waiter who should average 20% as I pride myself on giving stellar service. Sure, sometimes I miss and have my off days, but more than not I go above and beyond what normal people would expect when they pay 20%. However the days I’m off I get less than that (at times nothing) yet the days I give the best service of my life the number rarely goes above 20%. Guests often overlook rewarding great service but never forget to punish poor service, even if it’s minimal or not the servers fault. I think when discussing the guilt regarding what tip you left it’s important to point out that as much as you lower the tip for bad service you should equal be rewarding good service.

Lastly – you should never feel compelled to tip, even if it’s added to your bill. I struggle over it as a restaurant employee because I feel I should OVER tip because I understand or want good karma. While I won’t leave without some tip I don’t leave a normal tip if the service isn’t good. I’m infinitely patient and understanding so it takes a lot for me to lower a tip, but at the same rate you have to blow me away to get a significant amount more. In the case of tip being added to your check – if you disagree with the amount politely ask for the manager and explain to him that you didn’t feel the server deserved a tip of that amount. Any manager/restaurant worth their salt will remove the tip to show their appreciation of your patronage and assure a return visit – and this also allows them to discuss the situation with the server and hopefully coach them in to a better employee that will then be better for it (or help the restaurant as a whole and get rid of someone who is sub-par).

I feel like I’ve heard every side of the tipping argument and have sympathies all around – but it’s a government sanctioned practice. If you don’t like tipping you have two choices – don’t tip or harshly judge when tipping and the server suffers (and nothing changes), or work to change the standard through your local representatives for a fairer pay scale for tipped employees. I know which will happen as it takes far too much effort to change something like this and it would affect the bottom line of large and small companies who would fight against it, but I like to dream that some day it might be a little better for everyone involved – guest and server.

Hi Ted, I understand that viewpoint but the thing is that even the poor in this country are quite rich relative to the vast majority of the world. More than one-half of the world's people live below the internationally defined poverty line of less than U.S. $2 a day—including 97 percent in Uganda, 80 percent in Nicaragua, 66 percent in Pakistan, and 47 percent in China, according to data from the World Bank.

As an American, I have previously lived in poverty for years myself (as defined by the federal poverty levels) and in this blessed country, even the poor have access to food stamps and emergency medical care. It would not have been possible for me to die of hunger. In short, even though I had no home, no assets, no anything... I still was rich when compared to a good chunk of the world's population.

For this reason, I find it hard to donate to basic need charities here in the U.S. since there are others elsewhere who have it so much worse. And I'm in defensible position where I can fairly and accurately have that bias, since I have been a poor American myself for multiple years. These days I give at least 10% of my pre-tax annual income to internationally focused non-profits for this reason.

In short, unemployment and poverty in America is not fun (I know!). However, it's still living in the lap of luxury, on a relative basis. Furthermore, the difference you can make - dollar by dollar - with an efficient int'l focused charity is much more, compared to if it was spent within this borders. $5 here can buy 1 meal for some, $5 in Ethiopia can feed a person for 21 meals or 7 full days. That being said, my primary passion is addressing the root of the problem (i.e. creating clean water supplies, etc) so those in poverty in these countries can eventually become self sufficient.

Insurance - when has an umbrella policy ever saved a business money, except if they are being sued? Most umbrella policies are never tapped into though, they are seen only for the catastrophic loss. When does an agent reduce your insurance cost, isn't that in contrast to the way they are paid? It seems so few people know that there are insurance consultants out there that actually work for the client instead of the insurance carriers, and that is so seldom recommended. I am not saying insurance agents are bad, but they are paid commission based on how much you pay for insurance, and let's face it most people and business owners know little about insurance and have to rely on someone, but why someone who earns more when they sell more? That $1,000,000 dollar umbrella policy may likely cost you $1,000 a year to which the agent gets paid about $150 a year for selling it to you. Just food for thought. Cutting cost on insurance is easy to do without jeopardizing coverage but it is a good idea to look for an independent and neutral party to assist.

The annuity description was helpful, but how can such a relationship not allow for EIAs withdrawal?
I mean if I decide I want to get my money out why should I suffer a penalty?

I like your advice about things like this. Especially about reading the back of the card for expiration and devaluation. I won't purchase any GC that expires or decreases in value. That's just BS. I love Ted and Kyle on The Regular Guys Show. You guys are hilarious and informative. Good times.

With all the financial concerns to keep on top of (e.g.: finding the best ISAs, paying credit cards, making the right stock investment, etc.), things can get confusing and frustrating fast. With computer applications like these though, there is hope of being organised and actually improving personal finances.

I have been tinkering with this "first trading day of the month" method on a spreadsheet and also used money management and removed the worst performing 3 months of the year (same 3 every year).
The difference this makes to the returns is unbelievable, I plan to trade it starting Jan 2012 but may also try a 4 or 5 day trade along the same lines too.
Unfortunately 2011 was not a kind year to the system, hope it gets better from here on

Funny you posted this...My 7 YO son is going to have his party in December. My Wife priced out those places you described as well as party vans that came to the house with game platforms inside. When she was getting prices like $500 to $1000, I said, why don't we just ask him, if he wants a one-day party for $500+ OR we buy an XBOX 360 console and have a sleepover for 2-3 friends with pizza and cake and they can stay up all night and play XBOX.

Before she even got out the full explained idea of XBOX vs Party, XBOX was chosen! Yes, we bought it on sale ($300) with a $75 gift card used for party munchies (and other household goods) so, It's as close to a 1978 style party as you can have today!
