Gas Stations. Growing up in New Jersey, the only thing I looked forward to when Mom or Dad was filling up at the pump was watching the attendant wipe down our front windshield and cracking the window to catch a whiff of the gasoline smell. Most certainly, we avoided getting out of the car to use the gas stations bathroom facilities and if you wanted something to eat the best you could hope for was a Little Debbie snack or a pack of Lance's peanut butter or cheese crackers.
Today's gas stations look more like part convenience store, part gourmet food store, and part fill up your tank. Recently, a new RaceTrac opened up near me on Old Milton Parkway and I was amazed at how the entire store was put together. The friendliness of the staff and the cleanliness of the store was simply off the chart. But why oh why do kids ask Daddy and Mommy now to take them to the gas station? Here's what I found out at RaceTrac.
- Frozen Yogurt Bar- Why go to those high priced yogurt shops? I snagged three samples and for a much lower price the kids got a huge helping with toppings like M & M's, gummy bears, and even strawberries.
- Slushie Machines- With over 15 different flavors of slushies and smoothies ready to go, who needs to spend $6 or $8 on a smoothie? You have choices like Vanilla Frappe, Sweet Tea, and Blue Pop.
- Candy Bar- These aren't always the cheapest, but you can make a quick bag of whatever type of candy you want, but there are also tons of the regular snacks to choose from in the store.
- Coffee Bar- Over ten flavors of coffee for Mom and Dad and none of those crusty creamers sitting around for days and days. There is a fresh cooler of flavored creams ready to pour.
- Accessories- If your kids need a quick pair of sunglasses, a charger for their phone, or even little gifts for their friends, it is all right at your fingertips.
In other parts of the country, gas stations are now even offering upscale gourmet food, grab n' go sandwiches, and freshly baked muffins. It is no wonder the kids love it, so don't be shocked if one Friday night your kid says, "Daddy, Daddy, please take me to the gas station!"
