You Thief: How To Stop The Office Refrigerator Bandit

January 11, 2015

Are you experiencing a bit of a credit card hangover from a little too much shopping and dining out over the holidays. If you have fallen behind by $1,000 or more on your credit cards, it can seem to be a daunting task to crawl out of this New Year's financial hole. So, I thought I would give you 10 of my ideas on how to make some quick money here in the first quarter of 2015 to pay off that debt!

  1. Loan your stuff - Yes, loan out your stuff to other people and I'm not talking about doing a creepy Craigslist. There are two websites called www.loanables.com and www.neighborgoods.net that you can rent out your stuff to your neighbors such as your lawn mower or kayak and make a little dough.
  2. Have a garage sale - Garage sales can average between $100 bucks and $500 bucks depending on how much stuff you clean out of your closets. I recommend you use an app like www.square.com because not every person strolling up to your house will carry cash on them.
  3. Resell unused gift cards - Check your wallet and your dresser - you probably have unused gift cards. Some may even be to merchants you don't frequent. If that's the case, get some cash back on them by selling them on www.giftcardgranny.com. You won't get the full value of the cards, but it's better than having them sit unused.
  4. Sell your used cell phones, iPad or Mac - Your used electronic equipment may have value, particularly if it's recent and in good condition. Check out www.gazelle.com. They give you an estimate on your equipment, and the better stuff could fetch some real money. If it is too old (more than few years), you'll be out of luck
  5. Build a good product on Fiverr - At www.fiverr.com you can build up a product or a service and sell it for $5- can you edit, proofread, draw up cartoons? This may even give you a good idea if you have a business to start somewhere down the road.
  6. Customer or employee referral program - See if any of the companies you do business with have a customer referral program. Or perhaps your employer has an employee referral program (I know we have one). This could be an easy way to make $100 or even $500.
  7. Sell one of your collectibles - I know that most people really believe that their wine, baseball card, or coin collection is going to bring them fame and fortune, but all it will really do is take up space. Just sell one or two of the items on eBay and see how you do with your stuff. My father-in-law has been very successful with this strategy and Yankees memorabilia in retirement.
  8. Start taking surveys - (www.mysurvey.com) There are many companies today looking for focus groups or consumers that actually have expertise in a given arena. Take a look at this website and you could earn a bunch of money at nights or on the weekends by taking surveys.
  9. Shrink wrap your car - If you don't care about being a full time advertiser for another company, go to www.freecarmedia.com and you could earn up to $400 a month for being a moving billboard. Lots of companies participate in this program, but you better be sure you are ready for your car to get wrapped up!
  10. Parking Panda - I mentioned this a few months back, but depending on where your house or driveway is located (i.e.- if you live near a concert hall or ball park) you may be able to rent out spaces for people to park. At $15 or $20 a ball game, this could add up to be hundreds especially during a homestand.
  11. Don't eat out for two weeks - A typical dinner for a family of four at a casual fare restaurant is going to run you $50 to $70. If you cut this out a couple of times during a month and apply the difference to your credit cards, this could help you cut down on your debt.

These are some of my New Year's tips. Do you have any ideas on how to make $100 bucks fast? (ummm… be clean!)
