My family and I were recently on vacation in London. You need to make sure you put away a few extra dollars when you head out to London because it isn't a cheap city for vacationing. However, as a savvy money guy, I'm always looking for deals to put a few extra quid (see that British slang) back in my pocket. If you travel to London anytime soon, here are five attractions you can do on the cheap in London.
- Tate Modern- The Tate Modern Museum is now undergoing a new massive construction project and should prove to be an unbelievable attraction in the future. The beauty about visiting the Tate Modern which is just a hop, skip, and a jump from St. Paul's Cathedral is that it is a FREE attraction today. You are likely going to donate 1 pound for the map to the museum, but the rest of the attractions are FREE. There will always be one floor with the 'current' exhibits that you will have to pay to see, but all of the other floors filled with Picasso's, Warhol's, and other modern art are all there to view at no cost. There is even an exceptional drawing station to try out your art skills at no cost.
- St. James Park- If you aren't really up for the whole internal tour of Buckingham Palace, you and your family can get a bunch of good selfies and camera shots outside of the palace and even make it look like a changing guard photobombed your selfie. We know because we did it ourselves. One of the great delights while the weather is good in London, it walk the St. James Park for FREE. There are cool bridges with great views of the London Eye in the background, a great kid's park, and even an opportunity to feed the ducks. If you walk through the park you'll end up in Trafalgar Square.
- Visit Notting Hill or Harrods—If you are shopping, it's likely that you will end up spending some money. However, taking the Central line on the tube to Notting Hill or taking the tube to Kensington to take a stroll through Harrods can be completely FREE. Harrods department store is a must see. From the electronics to the food court to the home furnishings, you will see so many cool and unbelievable things in this great department store. Notting Hill (like the Buckhead of Atlanta), has a wonderful outdoor market on Portobello Road and tons of side street window shopping that can be super fun while you sip on a cup of coffee.
- The British Museum—Where we stayed in the west end of London, you are just short walk to Piccadilly Circus which is sort of the Times Square area of London. If you want to spend money, go see one of the many shows playing in the theater district. Right around the corner in the west end of London is the British Museum. This museum reveals stories of life, death, and glory. You can see how Native Americans lived centuries ago and you can even see the Rosetta Stone.
- Play Superman- How could I leave this blog without sharing that in London they still have the pay phone? I suppose no matter how much technology changes, London is recognized for their large Red telephone booths. It is a must do to take your picture in your booth and do your best Superman photo or family selfie. Pay phones are a thing of the past in America.
If you head out to London anytime soon, I hope these five smart money moves tips on how to do London on the cheap make your vacation more fun and keep some quid in your pocket.
