Five Ways Your Child Can Earn Money During The School Year

August 05, 2015

As back to school begins, why should the kids be the only ones to score some discounted merchandise? August can be a great month to find bargains out there if you know what to look for when you go shopping. Here are six items that you might want to track down this month if you are looking to grab a bargain in the dog days of summer.

  1. Anyone Want To Grill Out?- The beauty about living in certain parts of the country is the weather stays great all year round to grill. No matter what part of the country you live in, you'll start to see deals galore come about this month to pick up a new grill. Whether the brand is Weber, Kenmore, or Char-Broil, they will all go on sale soon. Check out big department or sporting goods stores such a Dick's Sporting Goods, Target, and Sears where grills can range from 10% off to over 50% off depending on the grill. Don't forget that many department stores will also mark down grill accessories such as brushes, tongs, and grill covers. Even high end stores including Williams-Sonoma and Sur La Table will be reducing prices on inventory they want to move.
  2. Outdoor Furniture- More and more, families are enjoying their outdoor spaces whether it be a pool, cooking center, or just a screened in porch. While this may seem like an odd time of year to change out the furniture, this is actually going to be one of your best times to snag a deal. Consider looking at some of the pricier stores for big markdowns such as Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and Restoration Hardware. You may see 20% to 30% in price slashing from these upscale stores whereas big department stores such as Sears may be 50% or more. If you live in Georgia, don't forget to pick up some tarp to cover your furniture for yellow dust season next spring.
  3. Summer Gear- As the summer is ending, check out stores such as Old Navy who practically give the summer clothing away as new inventory hits for the fall. Almost any smaller chains or bathing suit stores such as Wet Seal will allow you to take advantage of extra bargains.
  4. New Car- Oddly enough, many believe the very end of the year is the best time to get a new car. I have clients who own and run dealerships, and they tell me that August is one of the best times to look at getting the new car because models begin to roll out for 2016. That means they are more willing to work hard to get their current inventory off the lot. Even the high end luxury makers such as BMW, Porsche, and Audi will all have deals.
  5. Seeing A Bad Team In Your City- Why is my column better than the other personal finance people out there? LOL. That's because we come up with unique ideas. If you want to get good tickets to a professional sporting event, August for baseball can be one of the BEST times to get yourself some tickets. This is absolutely true if you live in a city where your home team is playing under .500 baseball. You might be able to get the tickets for FREE just by asking around the neighborhood or office to see who has some season tickets. If not, you can usually get a pretty good deal online for a family day because the team won't be able to fill all of the seats.
  6. Snowblower/Snowshovel- I really don't have to worry about this one here in Atlanta, and as unpleasant as it may seem to think about, winter will be here before you know it. This could be a great opportunity to grab yourself a lower price on items including snowblowers, snowshovels, and salt for melting ice on your driveway. You'll get strange looks when you leave the hardware store, but you'll be laughing your way to the bank in the winter.
