Reminiscing About The TV Dinner

Reminiscing About The TV Dinner

With all of these reality TV shows pretty much filling up network and cable stations alike, I was wondering if they would ever bring back really good cheesy TV that I saw when I was a kid like The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.   I can remember how much I looked forward to the shows coming on TV every week as well as what was going to happen in this week’s installment of Dynasty and Dallas.

All of this TV thinking got me to think about how much I don’t like the microwavable meals you can buy at the store today.   They all come in some cardboard like box and tray, and often they just don’t come out right after you microwave it up for about 3 to 5 minutes.    They look good on the package, but just don’t pack the punch when you eat them.

I know what we need.   We need to bring back the good old TV Dinner.   Not the microwavable ones, but the kind I had which were in the really cool aluminum tray so you really felt like you were having a meal.   I can never forget how much I liked Swanson’s Fried Chicken and the dee-licious mashed potatoes.   Somehow Swanson got the whole ratio of mashed potato to butter just perfect.   Who could forget the Salisbury Steak meal and how you would eat everything on the plate until you dug into the chocolate brownie (more like a mushed pudding) that was all of two bites.  It took more than 5 minutes for you to cook your meal, but boy 30 years later I can still remember that over any take out I had as a kid.

In this rushed world today, sometimes we need to just slow down just a bit.   You can’t kill a Hungry Man appetite with some measly Hot Pocket.   Today I am going to head out and have some carved turkey, some tater tots, and a little bit of the fruit cobbler.   Long live the TV Dinner!
